One joy of motoring on two wheels is simply putting on your helmet and gloves, jumping on your motorcycle and hitting the open road. To make that happen your motorcycle has to be in good working order – and that includes the 12V battery usually hidden beneath the seat.

A battery in good working order is an essential element because its primary purpose is to power the starter motor to turn the crank and get the engine running.

Once the engine is running, the battery also provides electricity for essential systems such as: the headlights, indicators and brake lights; ignition and any engine control units; dashboard displays including warning lights; the horn; and any electrical extras such as GPS.

To do all that – and particularly to have enough power to turn the engine over – the 12V battery needs to have sufficient voltage.

What is a healthy voltage for a motorcycle battery?

A battery in good condition will have around 12.7V when fully charged. Motorcycle batteries can have less than this ideal voltage if the vehicle is only used for short journeys or has been sitting idle for extended periods of time. If that’s during the winter, the voltage decrease can be even more apparent.

If the voltage falls below 12V there are problems ahead. You might begin to notice difficulty starting the engine. The headlights or dashboard might appear dimmer than usual. Other electrical systems might not work as intended.

How to keep the voltage at optimum levels

The best way to maintain a healthy 12.7V in your motorcycle battery is by regularly charging and maintaining it. Get in the habit of connecting a battery charger as often as is practical.

A battery charger such as CTEK’s NXT 5 will deliver high performance, reliability and ease of use. It supports both traditional lead acid batteries and the lighter lithium batteries preferred by some motorcycling enthusiasts.

The NXT 5 is ideal for motorcycle batteries. It has patented Recond and desulphation modes. And it adjusts the charging levels depending on the ambient temperature. It also has robust rubberised cables, automatic spark-free operation and reverse polarity protection.

So you can plug in and be confident that the NXT 5 will manage the process of restoring and maintaining your motorcycle battery’s ideal voltage. Which means your motorcycle is ready for you to jump in, turn on and ride off.
