Owning a boat can be an amazing experience, opening up inland waterways and the open sea for exploration and adventure.  Whether you are powered by sail or motor, all modern boats beyond the most basic dinghies relay not just on wind or fuel to operate, but also electricity. Onboard electrical systems can provide a wide range of services and benefits, depending on the type and size of the vessel.

The system might power an engine starter motor, navigation system, GPS, lighting, radio, USB charging for devices, fridge and freezer, cooking and much more. The more sophisticated the boat, the more potential there is for additional electrical loads, including entertainment systems and heating or air conditioning.

These systems – some of them safety critical – all rely on the vessel’s 12 volt batteries to store the electrical energy needed to power them. And as such a fundamental resource, those batteries need to remain healthy, charged and operating at optimum levels.

For that, they need monitoring, maintaining and charging. And an ideal way to do that is to have a battery charger installed onboard. And not just any charger. One option is a specialist marine charger, such as CTEK’s M15 or M25.

These are permanently installed in the boat and have a range of functions, including a ‘Recond’ mode for reconditioning deeply discharged Wet and Ca/Ca batteries, and a temperature sensor which optimises the charge if the temperature deviates from +25ºC. They also have a ‘Lithium’ mode for lithium (LiFePO4, Li-Fe, Li-iron, LFP) batteries. The M15 and M25 come with a long 4m cable with M10 eyelets for easy installation on your boat.

One of the key considerations when selecting a boat battery charger is its compatibility with your type of batteries, such as lead-acid, AGM or lithium-ion. Another factor is amperage: chargers with higher amperage can charge batteries faster. However, make sure the amperage is suitable for your battery size to achieve optimal charging.

The M15 is a 15 amp charger, Compatible with batteries from 28Ah to 300Ah (20Ah to 280Ah for lithium batteries). The M25 is recommended for boat owners who need quick and effective charging for larger service batteries. It is compatible with batteries from 40Ah to 500Ah (30Ah to 450Ah for lithium).

Free and easy – portable charging

Another option is a portable charger, such as CTEK’s CS FREE. It provides portable charging for 12V lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries, so you can charge your boat’s batteries away from shore when you don’t have access to a power hook up.

CS FREE can itself be charged using a solar panel, which again can be portable and stowable – ideal for the marine environment. CS FREE can also be used as an adaptive booster (jump starter alternative) to power up your flat battery swiftly and safely, without risk of damaging your battery or vessel electronics. Ideal for if you have a flat battery far from shore.

Choosing the right battery charger can significantly impact the reliability and longevity of your boat’s battery system. Proper charging ensures that batteries last longer, reducing the frequency of costly replacements.

Whether you are a casual boater or a seasoned sailor, understanding the types and benefits of marine battery chargers is essential. Consider your specific needs, budget and the type of boating you enjoy when selecting the best charger for your boat.

Road trip ready: how to avoid a flat battery ruining your summer escape

There’s nothing quite like heading off in a motorhome during summer. Longer days, spontaneous stopovers, coastal roads, mountain campsites and evenings spent outdoors – it’s what motorhome life is all about. But summer adventures also place extra demand on your vehicle’s battery system. Fridges run constantly, lighting stays on later into the evening, phones and devices are always charging and many motorhomes sit unused between trips.
