Faced with a flat battery and needing a quick start, drivers have traditionally turned to jump leads and a kind person with another car. But there is another way, and it is an increasingly popular and convenient choice: a battery booster.

More and more drivers are packing a charged up battery booster in their vehicle, just in case they suffer the inconvenience of a flat battery. It’s good to be prepared, and that preparation should include learning how to use the booster before you need to.

When the need strikes, it could be dark, it could be cold, it could be raining. Better than struggling to look up instructions or watch a video at the roadside, having spent a little time familiarising yourself with the booster and how it works is a good plan.

Boosters such as CTEK’s RB 3000 and RB 4000 are simple to use, but we do recommend you learn how to use them before you need to. The RB3000 provides up to 30 jump starts on a single 2.5 hour charge, the RB4000 up to 45 after charging up for just 3.5 hours. When fully charged they will hold power for up to six months. Both are compact, easy to transport and lightweight enough to take everywhere.

Step-by-step: how to boost a car battery

  • Check your surroundings: ensure your car is safely parked and the keys are removed from the ignition
  • Prepare your booster: check the charge level
  • Connect the clamps: attach the red clamp to the positive (+) battery terminal and the black clamp to an earth point on your car. Some cars have a dedicated post for this. If there is no other option, use the negative (–) terminal on the battery. Make sure the clamps are secure and aren’t touching each other
  • Switch on the booster and attempt to start the vehicle
  • Remove the booster: once the engine is running, switch off the booster and disconnect it, starting with the black clamp and then the red.

Why a booster is better than jump leads

A dedicated booster is not only straightforward to use but also safer and more reliable than jump cables and a second vehicle. That second vehicle won’t always be available, and there’s a risk of incorrect connection. Boosters such as the RB 3000 and RB 4000 feature built-in safety mechanisms to protect both you and your vehicle, making them ideal for modern cars with advanced systems.

Advanced boosters such as the RB 3000 and RB 4000 not only get you back on the road in minutes but also have other useful functions. They RB Series boosters serve as versatile power banks for your electronic devices and include a built-in multi-mode light for added convenience and for use as an alert beacon.
