CTEK's Stefan Gabrielsson put forward five proposals to boost the take up of electric cars in an article in the Swedish financial newspaper Dagens Industri.

In the article co-authored with Mattias Goldmann, CEO of the 2030 Secretariat, the two men called for certainty in the measures Sweden takes to encourage drivers to switch to electric mobility and get closer to the conversion rates in neighbouring countries.

They suggested five measures that would help:

  • Increase vehicle tax for new fossil cars gradually until 2030 and earmark the revenues for electrification incentives.
  • Broaden the electric car premium to all households with incomes up to the median throughout the country.
  • Introduce social leasing for households that otherwise cannot afford an electric car.
  • Let municipalities promote the transition, for example through lower parking fees, reserved parking spaces and congestion taxes.
  • Extend the ‘bonus-malus’ system for fossil-fuelled cars up to seven years old.

Stefan and Mattias wrote: "The transport sector accounts for Sweden's single largest climate impact and is our clearest security policy risk. Both problems have the same solution: a credible, cross-block and long-term electrification policy."
