Bei -20 °C stehen bei einer voll aufgeladenen Batterie etwa 40 % ihrer Leistung zum Anlassen des Motors zur Verfügung.

Energieverbrauch durch Zubehör:

Bei kaltem Wetter verlassen sich Fahrer eher auf Fahrzeugzubehör wie Heizungen, Entfroster und Sitzwärmer. Der Betrieb dieser elektrischen Komponenten belastet die Autobatterie zusätzlich und entleert sie schneller. Wenn die Batterie nicht ausreichend aufgeladen wird, kann sie möglicherweise keine wichtigen Systeme mehr mit Strom versorgen, was zu Fehlfunktionen oder einem vollständigen Ausfall führen kann.

Einfrieren des Batterieelektrolyts:

Bei einer Batterie mit einem Ladezustand von 100 % gefriert der Elektrolyt bei -33 °C.

Sulfatierung:

Kaltes Wetter verlangsamt zwar den Sulfatierungsprozess in der Batterie (die chemische Reaktion verlangsamt sich bei niedrigen Temperaturen), aber die zunehmende Nutzung von Heizungen, Lampen usw. bedeutet, dass die Batterie wahrscheinlich nicht vollständig aufgeladen wird, was zu Sulfatierung führen kann. Sulfatkristalle können die Kapazität der Batterie mit der Zeit verringern und den Ladevorgang behindern. Wenn Sulfatierung nicht umgehend behoben wird, kann sie zu dauerhaften Schäden führen, die den Austausch der Batterie erforderlich machen.
