Bei -20 °C stehen bei einer voll aufgeladenen Batterie etwa 40 % ihrer Leistung zum Anlassen des Motors zur Verfügung.

Energieverbrauch durch Zubehör:

Bei kaltem Wetter neigen Fahrer dazu, verstärkt auf Fahrzeugzubehör wie Heizungen, Scheibenenteiser und Sitzheizungen zurückzugreifen. Der Betrieb dieser elektrischen Komponenten belastet die Autobatterie zusätzlich und entlädt sie schneller. Bei einem Ladezustand von 100 % gefriert der Elektrolyt bei 33 °C.

Sulfatierung:

Kaltes Wetter verlangsamt zwar den Sulfatierungsprozess in der Batterie (chemische Reaktionen verlangsamen sich bei niedrigen Temperaturen), doch der vermehrte Einsatz von Heizungen, Beleuchtung usw. führt dazu, dass die Batterie wahrscheinlich nicht vollständig geladen wird, was zu Sulfatierung führen kann. Sulfatkristalle können die Kapazität der Batterie mit der Zeit verringern und den Ladevorgang behindern. Wird die Sulfatierung nicht umgehend behoben, kann sie zu dauerhaften Schäden führen, die einen Austausch der Batterie erforderlich machen.
