Holiday trend: Coolcation. These holiday destinations will cool you down

The summer holidays are just around the corner: in the past, this meant "off to the south and after the sun". But record heatwaves have been dampening the desire for hot temperatures for some years now. Instead, so-called "coolcations" are the order of the day: holidays in cooler, more temperate climes. We present four destinations.

2023 was the warmest year since data collection began - in Germany and worldwide. Extreme temperatures were measured in popular holiday regions on the Mediterranean. In July, Spain, Italy, Greece and Turkey recorded temperatures of over 45 degrees Celsius. No amount of ice cream, drinks and laps in the pool will cool you down enough. More and more people are therefore looking for alternatives to the typical southern holiday destinations for so-called coolcations.

What is a coolcation?

Coolcation is a combination of the English words "cool" and "holiday" - meaning a holiday in regions with a moderate climate, i.e. Scandinavia instead of the North Pole. In addition to pleasant cooling, coolcations also offer the opportunity to discover lesser-known but equally fascinating destinations that may even be less crowded. You can relax and enjoy the beauty of nature without having to push your way through the crowds. What all destinations have in common is that they can be easily explored by car on a road trip. This also gives you flexibility on the ground if, for example, bad weather is forecast for a longer period of time. After all, coolcation doesn't have to mean rain, hail and ice.

Four destinations for coolcation in Europe:

Denmark

Like many popular typical summer destinations, our neighbouring country scores with miles of beaches. There is a diverse coastal landscape to discover: from dunes and cliffs to picturesque bays and small islands. On warm bathing days, a fresh breeze will cool you down. You can choose between the shallow Baltic Sea and the rough North Sea. In many places, the average maximum temperatures are between 16 and 19 degrees, for example in Søndervig, Frederikshavn (Palm Beach) or Tisvildeleje.

Finland

There is pure sunshine in Finland - 24 hours a day. Tourists can enjoy the midnight sun here: long summer days and so-called white nights. Because the sun never sets here. Plenty of time to discover the diversity of Finland: from beaches to mountains to lakes, all at a pleasant average temperature of 20 degrees. If the weather is bad, you can warm up in one of the many saunas for which Finland is famous.

Norway

Whether relaxation or adventure - the Scandinavian country has something for everyone. It is known for its spectacular fjords, which are best explored on the water, for example by kayak. But there is also plenty to discover on land: The mountainous landscape is perfect for hiking, for example the Jotunheimen National Park and the Lofoten Islands. The most remote and lonely spots are ideal for travelling by car.

Estonia

The northernmost country in the Baltic region offers marvellous nature experiences with moors, forests and over 1,500 islands. It is just over 45,000 square kilometres in size and is therefore perfect for exploring by car. In summer, the temperatures are between 18 and 20 degrees, but the temperature can occasionally reach 30 degrees. If you are in the mood for culture, you should pay a visit to Tartu. The student city on the coast was chosen as the European Capital of Culture 2024 and will offer a corresponding programme.
