Charging a hybrid car battery is not only about the high-voltage drive battery. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles also use a separate 12V battery to power essential systems and enable the vehicle to start its electronic control sequence. If that battery is flat, the vehicle may not enter its ready-to-drive mode.

Two batteries, two very different jobs

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles are often discussed in terms of their large high-voltage battery. That is understandable: it stores the energy used by the electric motor and, in a plug-in hybrid, can be replenished from an external EV charge point.

But there is another battery that deserves attention. Like a conventional car, a hybrid or plug-in hybrid has a low-voltage battery – usually 12V – supporting essential electrical systems.

Why can a hybrid fail to become ‘ready’?

In many hybrids, the 12V battery does not crank the engine like a traditional starter battery. Instead, it powers control units, locks, alarms, lights and other low-voltage systems. Crucially, it helps initialise the electronics and connect the high-voltage system.

If the 12V battery is too low, the dashboard may remain dark, warning messages may appear, central locking may stop working or the vehicle may not enter its ready-to-drive mode – even when the high-voltage battery contains plenty of energy.

That is why charging a hybrid car battery requires knowing which battery you mean. Plugging a PHEV into an EV charge point charges its high-voltage traction battery, but it should not automatically be assumed that this will fully maintain the separate 12V battery under every condition.

When can the 12V battery lose charge?

The same usage patterns that affect other vehicles can matter here too:

  • the vehicle is left unused for an extended period
  • journeys are short or infrequent
  • security, connected or keyless systems remain active
  • the battery is older or already in a low state of charge
  • cold weather increases demand and reduces available battery performance

RAC guidance confirms that plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles still rely on a 12V auxiliary battery, which can go flat when a vehicle is unused. Some vehicles may maintain it in particular states, while others have specific storage and maintenance recommendations.

How to look after your 12V

Check the handbook before connecting any equipment. Use only a charger compatible with the 12V battery’s chemistry and follow the specified charging points and procedure. If access is difficult, warning messages persist or the battery repeatedly loses charge, ask an authorised workshop to test the battery and vehicle charging system.

The key message is simple: charging a hybrid car battery involves understanding both battery systems. Looking after the smaller 12V battery can be just as important to getting your journey started as having energy in the high-voltage battery.

CTEK’s CS ONE (Gen 2) delivers premium charging, with automatic APTO™ adaptive charging and optimised programs for any 12V battery. The CTEK app enables this charger to provide remote access, real-time monitoring and full charge history. The CS ONE (Gen 2) has the power for bigger batteries but its outstanding features work on any battery in any vehicle.

Myths versus facts

Myth Fact
A charged traction battery means the vehicle will always start. A low 12V battery may prevent essential systems from initialising.
Hybrids do not have conventional low-voltage batteries. Hybrids and PHEVs use a separate low-voltage battery, commonly 12V.
Every hybrid maintains its 12V battery in the same way. Charging behaviour and maintenance advice vary by manufacturer and model.

CTEK becomes EV charging partner to the Swedish Ski Association

CTEK has entered into a new agreement with the Swedish Ski Association, providing CC3 EV charging infrastructure at Riksskidstadion in Falun, Sweden’s Alpine National Arena and the Swedish Ski Association’s Åre office. Delivered alongside installation partner Kalema e-Mobility, the charging solutions will support electric passenger cars and support vehicles used by athletes, coaches, staff and the wider organisation. Falun, Sweden – CTEK, a global leader in battery charging and electric vehicle charging, has entered into a new agreement with the Swedish Ski Association to provide EV charging infrastructure at Riksskidstadion in Falun, Sweden’s Alpine National Arena and the Swedish Ski Association’s Åre office. Under the agreement, CTEK is providing charging solutions from its CHARGESTORM CONNECTED 3 (CC3) product family. The project is being delivered alongside installation partner Kalema e-Mobility, which is carrying out the installations at Riksskidstadion, Sweden’s Alpine National Arena and the Swedish Ski Association’s Åre office. The chargers will support electric passenger cars and support vehicles used by athletes, coaches and staff, as well as other electric vehicles operated by the Swedish Ski Association. They will provide reliable and convenient charging when vehicles are at Riksskidstadion, Sweden’s Alpine National Arena or the Swedish Ski Association’s Åre office, supporting the Association’s continued transition towards more sustainable transport. For the Swedish Ski Association, the drive to constantly improve goes beyond athletic performance. The Association believes it is equally important to keep improving the smart, climate-friendly solutions that support its everyday operations. “We are delighted to work with the Swedish Ski Association as its EV charging partner. Elite sport depends not only on what happens on the track or slopes, but also on the people, vehicles and infrastructure working behind the scenes. By providing our CC3 charging technology and working alongside Kalema e-Mobility, we can help support the Association’s everyday operations and its transition towards more electrified transport,” said Johanna Mogren Sundqvist, Sales Manager EVSE at CTEK.
