Owning a boat can be an amazing experience, opening up inland waterways and the open sea for exploration and adventure.  Whether you are powered by sail or motor, all modern boats beyond the most basic dinghies relay not just on wind or fuel to operate, but also electricity. Onboard electrical systems can provide a wide range of services and benefits, depending on the type and size of the vessel.

The system might power an engine starter motor, navigation system, GPS, lighting, radio, USB charging for devices, fridge and freezer, cooking and much more. The more sophisticated the boat, the more potential there is for additional electrical loads, including entertainment systems and heating or air conditioning.

These systems – some of them safety critical – all rely on the vessel’s 12 volt batteries to store the electrical energy needed to power them. And as such a fundamental resource, those batteries need to remain healthy, charged and operating at optimum levels.

For that, they need monitoring, maintaining and charging. And an ideal way to do that is to have a battery charger installed onboard. And not just any charger. One option is a specialist marine charger, such as CTEK’s M15 or M25.

These are permanently installed in the boat and have a range of functions, including a ‘Recond’ mode for reconditioning deeply discharged Wet and Ca/Ca batteries, and a temperature sensor which optimises the charge if the temperature deviates from +25ºC. They also have a ‘Lithium’ mode for lithium (LiFePO4, Li-Fe, Li-iron, LFP) batteries. The M15 and M25 come with a long 4m cable with M10 eyelets for easy installation on your boat.

One of the key considerations when selecting a boat battery charger is its compatibility with your type of batteries, such as lead-acid, AGM or lithium-ion. Another factor is amperage: chargers with higher amperage can charge batteries faster. However, make sure the amperage is suitable for your battery size to achieve optimal charging.

The M15 is a 15 amp charger, Compatible with batteries from 28Ah to 300Ah (20Ah to 280Ah for lithium batteries). The M25 is recommended for boat owners who need quick and effective charging for larger service batteries. It is compatible with batteries from 40Ah to 500Ah (30Ah to 450Ah for lithium).

Free and easy – portable charging

Another option is a portable charger, such as CTEK’s CS FREE. It provides portable charging for 12V lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries, so you can charge your boat’s batteries away from shore when you don’t have access to a power hook up.

CS FREE can itself be charged using a solar panel, which again can be portable and stowable – ideal for the marine environment. CS FREE can also be used as an adaptive booster (jump starter alternative) to power up your flat battery swiftly and safely, without risk of damaging your battery or vessel electronics. Ideal for if you have a flat battery far from shore.

Choosing the right battery charger can significantly impact the reliability and longevity of your boat’s battery system. Proper charging ensures that batteries last longer, reducing the frequency of costly replacements.

Whether you are a casual boater or a seasoned sailor, understanding the types and benefits of marine battery chargers is essential. Consider your specific needs, budget and the type of boating you enjoy when selecting the best charger for your boat.

CTEK becomes EV charging partner to the Swedish Ski Association

CTEK has entered into a new agreement with the Swedish Ski Association, providing CC3 EV charging infrastructure at Riksskidstadion in Falun, Sweden’s Alpine National Arena and the Swedish Ski Association’s Åre office. Delivered alongside installation partner Kalema e-Mobility, the charging solutions will support electric passenger cars and support vehicles used by athletes, coaches, staff and the wider organisation. Falun, Sweden – CTEK, a global leader in battery charging and electric vehicle charging, has entered into a new agreement with the Swedish Ski Association to provide EV charging infrastructure at Riksskidstadion in Falun, Sweden’s Alpine National Arena and the Swedish Ski Association’s Åre office. Under the agreement, CTEK is providing charging solutions from its CHARGESTORM CONNECTED 3 (CC3) product family. The project is being delivered alongside installation partner Kalema e-Mobility, which is carrying out the installations at Riksskidstadion, Sweden’s Alpine National Arena and the Swedish Ski Association’s Åre office. The chargers will support electric passenger cars and support vehicles used by athletes, coaches and staff, as well as other electric vehicles operated by the Swedish Ski Association. They will provide reliable and convenient charging when vehicles are at Riksskidstadion, Sweden’s Alpine National Arena or the Swedish Ski Association’s Åre office, supporting the Association’s continued transition towards more sustainable transport. For the Swedish Ski Association, the drive to constantly improve goes beyond athletic performance. The Association believes it is equally important to keep improving the smart, climate-friendly solutions that support its everyday operations. “We are delighted to work with the Swedish Ski Association as its EV charging partner. Elite sport depends not only on what happens on the track or slopes, but also on the people, vehicles and infrastructure working behind the scenes. By providing our CC3 charging technology and working alongside Kalema e-Mobility, we can help support the Association’s everyday operations and its transition towards more electrified transport,” said Johanna Mogren Sundqvist, Sales Manager EVSE at CTEK. Developed in Sweden for professional EV charging, CC3 can be adapted to different organisations, vehicle requirements and parking environments. The EV chargers can provide up to 22 kW per outlet and support connectivity and load balancing. This allows the available electrical capacity to be used efficiently while enabling the charging infrastructure to expand as the Swedish Ski Association’s requirements grow. "For us, this investment is about creating the conditions for a smarter and more sustainable operation. Our athletes, coaches and staff travel extensively throughout the year, and reliable charging infrastructure is becoming an increasingly important part of our everyday operations. CTEK combines proven technology with strong local roots in Dalarna, making them a natural supplier as we continue to develop our organisation and reduce the environmental impact of our transport solutions," said Johan Gräfnings, Swedish Ski Association. The agreement connects CTEK’s home in Falun, Dalarna, with the Swedish Ski Association’s activities at Sweden’s Alpine National Arena and its Åre office in Jämtland. For CTEK, it is an opportunity to support the Swedish Ski Association and its national teams with technology that makes a practical difference behind the scenes.
