Om bilmotorn är avstängd kanske du antar att batteriet också är avstängt. Så är inte fallet. Batteriet påverkas av en parasitström, där små mängder ström används.

Vad orsakar parasitström?

I naturen är en parasit en organism som får sin föda från eller på bekostnad av sin värd. I din bil kan ett antal system "mata" från ditt batteri.

Dagens bilar har hundratals elektroniska system, varav ett antal kräver en konstant tillförsel av milliampere ström.

Ditt fordons minnesäten, internklocka, GPS-system, 12V-uttag, speglar, larmsystem, motorstyrning, radio och lampor kan alla dra ström från ditt batteri.

I nyare fordon anses en parasitström på 50-85 milliampere vara typisk. För äldre fordon med färre elektronik är en ström på mindre än 50 milliampere normal.

Vilka är farorna med parasitström?

Om ett batteri under långa perioder inte laddas av generatorn, kommer de små milliamperen som dras av parasitenheterna att döda det.

Även normal parasitström, även känd som ”nyckel-från-ström”, sliter på ett batteri. Om ett batteri sjunker under 12,4 volt börjar sulfatering uppstå. 

Sulfatering är en ansamling av blysulfatkristaller. Detta sker när ett batteri inte får full laddning (även kallat "att döda batteriet" eller "att tömma batteriet"). Sulfatmaterial kristalliseras på de urladdade delarna av batteriplattorna, vilket skadar batteriet.

Alla blybatterier ackumulerar sulfatering under sin livslängd, som en del av den naturliga kemiska processen. Problemen uppstår när sulfatering byggs upp.

Att låta ett batteri vara dött under långa perioder kommer att orsaka sulfatering.
