Dala Airport Embraces Sustainability with Kalema E-Mobility & CTEK

Case Study | EV Charging

In a significant step towards sustainable travel, Dala Airport hired Kalema E-Mobility to install multiple CTEK CHARGESTORM® CONNECTED 2 (CC2) chargers to support electric vehicle (EV) and electric aircraft charging. Mats Hakkarainen, CEO from Dala Airport, shares insights into the installation and the airport’s commitment to green mobility.

Dala Airport’s decision to install the CC2 chargers stemmed from a dual commitment: to provide service to its travellers and to contribute to the green transition. "On the one hand, it is part of a sustainability objective," says Mats, "on the other hand, it is about providing service to those traveling here."

The choice of CTEK was influenced by both functionality and familiarity. The airport team explored various charger options, but after a discussion with people they knew from E-mobility, they felt the CC2’s features fit their needs best. According to Mats,

"We found it to be a fantastic combination of smart technology, ease of use, and versatility, offering great value for our needs."

In 2020, the first round of installations included six chargers: three for small electric aircraft, two for the visitor car park, and one for the staff car park. Later, five additional chargers were added to the long-term car park to meet increasing demand.

The CC2 chargers have proven to be a reliable choice, as Mats reports, "Everything has been working well, and no one has complained." With steady performance, Dala Airport’s charging infrastructure has seen rising use over time. "It was a bit slow in the beginning, but now it's pretty much every day," Mats observes, underscoring the growing demand as EVs and electric aviation become more mainstream.

Looking ahead, Dala Airport has plans to further expand its sustainable infrastructure. "In the future, we want to install charging stations for electric lorries," says Mats. Additionally, they are prepared to add more CC2 chargers as demand increases, reinforcing their role as a forward-thinking player in green mobility.

To ensure travellers are aware of these resources, the airport has listed EV charging options on its website. While they haven’t pursued broader advertising yet, raising awareness remains a priority. Mats is optimistic about Dala Airport’s role in the future of EV charging, saying, "There will be a continued need to charge travellers' cars and also small electric aircraft, and demand will increase over time. We want to be part of the shift to green mobility."

Through initiatives like these, Dala Airport is establishing itself as a leader in sustainable travel, enhancing both traveller convenience and its commitment to a cleaner future.
