CASE STUDY | EVSE | CTEK, Volvo CE and Vattenfall in unique joint project to build charging stations together

All-electric construction vehicles, smart, eco-labelled electricity and powerful EV chargers in cutting-edge charging infrastructure project. 

There is increased demand for plug-in electric vehicles (EVs), the market is exploding, and the charging infrastructure needs to expand meet this growing demand. This is important at home, for destination charging and at the workplace. 

CTEK, Volvo Construction Equipment (CE) and Vattenfall have challenged the Swedish charging infrastructure, by using Volvo’s electric-powered construction equipment in a project to install 64 charging stations at the Volvo CE site in Eskilstuna, for use by Volvo CE’s staff, customers and visitors. In total, over three tons of CO2 emissions were saved.

Anne Bast, Communications Manager for Volvo Construction Equipment in Eskilstuna, said: “We are seeing more and more of our 2,000 employees at the Eskilstuna site switching to electric vehicles, and we need to make it possible for them, customers and other visitors to charge their cars”. 

During the construction in Spring 2022, Volvo’s ECR25 electric excavators and L25 electric wheel loaders were used. Not only did they manage the narrow shafts, the electric construction vehicles also reduced the noise level that is often a problem at construction sites.

The charging stations are connected to Vattenfall InCharge, which enables monitoring of consumption, control and billing of usage through various digital services. The electricity itself comes from hydropower labelled “Good Environmental Choice”, from Vattenfall, and the load balancing is managed by CTEK Nanogrid.

Susanna Hurtig, Nordic Manager for E-mobility at Vattenfall, said “Interest in electric vehicles is growing in all segments, and Volvo CE is an exciting partner that saw the need to give its employees the opportunity to charge at work early on. It is particularly pleasing that the 138 new charging points have been installed with Volvo's own electrically powered construction equipment, as the carbon footprint in construction phases can be quite high.”

The hardware consists of 64 CTEK Chargestorm Connected 2 (CC2) EV charging boxes, each with dual charging sockets, mounted on a pole and with a maximum power of 22kW per socket . To activate the vehicle charging, the driver uses a charging tag or the InCharge mobile app.
